Our Man in LA
Just nine cinematographers from around the world were invited to attend and our guy Dale has followed Shane’s blog for several years so jumped at the opportunity to attend and have access to someone operating at such a high level. Shane Hurlbut, ASC (American Society of Cinematographers) is an innovative cinematic pioneer who deploys new techniques on every project as a challenge, enhancing the quality of his work and bringing a new level of unparalleled passion and excitement to every project. Each day of the workshop was packed, Dale arrived at the studio at 7am and had breakfast with Shane, the other workshop attendees and crew running through the plan for the day ahead. They would then work through several setups till lunch and continue till 7pm. Then they would stay on for another hour just talking through the tiny details of scenes they'd been working on with the crew, key grip, 1st AC, shoot director and Shane himself. His wife Lydia, an integral part of his team was always on set making sure everyone was happy and getting enough out of the workshop, and saving Dale from LA sunburn spontaneously appearing with hats and sun cream on outdoor shoots! What Dale found most interesting was the work involving complex lighting techniques, exterior lighting using huge 18k powerful lights, setting up a car for filming, interior night time scenes alongside setting up recreations of scenes from several movies. Shane explained why he would use certain types of light in different situations and how the look of a scene can be changed subtly with a different lighting technique. Lighting is an area of filmmaking which can be overlooked, it is easier than ever to pick up a camera and shoot great looking images. Being able to observe, understand, control, and replicate lighting allows for cinematographers to be far more creative and consistent, whether we're shooting a simple interview or a commercial shoot for Rimmel.
As well as attending the workshop Dale also took the opportunity to film a short fashion film linking up with a modelling agency in LA and capture the perfect LA sunset with some dramatic shots along Zuma beach in Malibu. On his travels capturing time lapses throughout LA he was also introduced to some of California’s native fauna - Rattlesnakes!
Shane is a member of the prestigious American Society of Cinematographers. He has
worked with Russell Crowe, Aaron Paul, Amanda Seyfried, Diane Kruger, Jane Fonda, Octavia Spencer, Quvenzhane Wallis, Ryan Eggold, Janet McTeer, Bruce Greenwood, and Kylie Rogers, Shia LaBeouf, Matthew McConaughey, Kevin Costner, Will Ferrell, Christian Bale, Kirsten Dunst, Jay Hernandez, Ray Liotta and Don Cheadle.
He has created music videos for - Nirvana, American Head Charge, Kustom, Rolling Stones, Smashing Pumpkins (multiple), Helmet, 7 Mary 3, Cypress Hill (multiple), Filter, Schleprock, Too Short, Semisonic, Salt N Pepa, Sam Phillips, Quicksand, Bush and Tori Amos.
